Job Title - Senior DBA Manager |
| Position Summary |
| Responsible for maintaining and supporting the relational database systems in the UNIX and WINTEL environments. The Manager of DBA Services is an integral part of the Information Technology Department and is responsible for overseeing the efficient and effective management of the corporation*s electronic data. The Manager of DBA Services must ensure highly available, stable, secure and recoverable databases. The Manager of DBA Services is a customer service advocate for the IT department and maintains a high degree of customer satisfaction for all users of database services. |
| ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES |
| All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with company*s policies, procedures, guidelines, contractual commitments and governmental regulations. |
- Maintain stable development, test, reporting and production database environments.
- Oversee maintenance and support of UNIX server hardware, software and operating system environment.
- Provide on call support and for the timely and accurate resolution of problems for all database systems.
- Execute a mentoring process to bring all DBAs up to a high degree of competency.
- Determine, schedule and lead the major projects to be accomplished by the DBA department.
- Coordinate and schedule all projects that require database interaction and support.
- Participate in all phases of development projects that interact with the database systems.
- Work with application programmers on the use of database tools, techniques and concepts.
- Assist application developers with writing efficient SQL.
- Plan, install, coordinate and implement program products and tools that ease the administration and monitoring of databases.
- Develop and maintain standards to effectively monitor system performance.
- Maintain adequate operating system backups and daily backups of all critical databases according to disaster recovery procedures.
- Keep current on all new DBMS releases to exploit the new functionality.
- Coordinate and perform database upgrades, installs and testing.
- Perform Unix server installations, upgrades and testing.
- Provide support to the corporation in handling the daily scheduled database production jobs.
- Perform table modifications, database sizing, security and referential integrity administration.
- Maintain database synchronization on the backup servers in accordance with the disaster recovery procedures.
- Devise database reorganization and tuning strategies for optimum performance.
- Make recommendations to senior IT and/or company personnel on the most cost-effective technical solutions during project design and implementation.
- Document required Service Level Agreements for all database servers.
- Co-ordinate all downtime and service impacting activities and inform the various business units.
- Prepare, execute and document Disaster Recovery procedures for all database systems and co-ordinate recovery activities with the Disaster Recovery team.
- Produce monthly reports of database growth and level of activity for critical databases.
- Coordinate, maintain and support all HR functions for direct reports, including vacation/time off requests, annual reviews and expense reports.
- Coordinate CARs and Purchase orders for equipment and materials required in maintaining an effective department.
- Plans, organizes, and controls the activities related to the assigned function
- Organizes, manages, and directs the work of the employees in the assigned function
- Oversees the assignment of duties, and responsibilities to employees
- Observes and evaluates employees and work procedures to ensure quality standards and service are met
- Mentors, develops and provides on-the-job training to subordinates to strengthen their current performance and preparation for future advancement
- Approves personnel actions such as new hire requests and discharges, to ensure proper staffing
- Provides approval for overtime needs

| QUALIFICATIONS |

| Experience |
- Minimum five years DBA experience with Sybase and 2 years experience with MS SQL server.
- Prior experience performing database installations and upgrades.
- Prior experience with Sybase replication is a plus.
- Experience with sql scripting, stored procedures and triggers.
- Working knowledge of HP-UX and Windows operating systems.
- Ability to develop and maintain Unix shell scripts and cron jobs.
- Working knowledge of network connectivity and interoperability of multi-platform environments.
- Project management skills are required and the ability to use Microsoft Project.
- Proven production support background of application databases in a 24 X 7 environment.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills are necessary for this position.
- Database administration certification supplements the position skill base and is considered a plus
- Ability to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Excellent time management and organizational skills are necessary for this position.
- Ability to work independently without supervision
- Ability to work well with people from different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience
- Ability to work on various assignments simultaneously
- Knowledge of policies and practices involved in the human resources function
- Ability to manage a staff in a positive and productive manner by motivating, developing and managing employees as they work
- Ability to utilize and administer the disciplinary action process through coaching and counseling to improve performance or terminate employment
- Ability to communicate tactfully, verbally and in writing with department heads, managers, coworkers and vendors to resolve problems and negotiate resolutions
- Working knowledge of computers, internet access, and the ability to navigate within an automated systems as well as a variety of software packages such as Outlook, Excel and Word.

| Education |
Associate*s degree in computer science or related field from an accredited college or university or the international equivalent preferred.
